Waterproof rating — what it means and how to maintain itUpdated 5 days ago
Condition 1 waterproof cases carry an IP67 rating.
What IP67 means
- IP6X — completely dustproof under any conditions.
- IPX7 — can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes without water intrusion.
This rating covers rain, splashing, and submersion during water crossings.
The O-ring seal
The waterproof seal is maintained by a neoprene O-ring running around the perimeter of the lid. The O-ring compresses when the latches are closed, creating an airtight, watertight seal.
Maintaining the seal
- Inspect the O-ring periodically for cuts, flattening, or debris.
- Clean the O-ring channel with a soft cloth to remove dirt and grit.
- Apply a small amount of silicone grease, not petroleum-based, to keep the O-ring supple.
- Ensure the O-ring is seated evenly in its channel before closing the case.
What voids the waterproof rating
- Damaged, displaced, or missing O-ring
- Debris in the seal area when the case is closed
- Modifications to the case body or lid
